why-youre-absolutely-right-to-think-the-candy-crush-ipo-is-a-terrible-idea

After trying Candy Crush, and introducing my girlfriend to this mind manipulating game, I started thinking about making a simple, yet addictive game. In the same period I heard in the news about Tetris celebrating it’s 30′ anniversary and started thinking about this simple yet addictive game from my own childhood.

Two games almost 30 years apart getting players hooked in two very different ways. One could argue that when Tetris came out, the competition was not so hard. But where Tertis hooked the user with unlimited play time and repetitive game play, Candy Crush hooks the player by limiting the players ability to play as long as she wants. One might thing this is counter intuitive, but the publisher King has actually done their home work when it comes to the psychology of the everyday man and women. Because when Tetris came out, computers was nothing everyone had, and not so mobile as our phones and tablets are today. This difference leeds to the need to create a different model for hooking the player.

But first lets talk about the fun part; my new game idea :-) (Monetization is important, but it’s not fun!)

Roto Birds started with this simple idea: What if I made a rotating Tetris game and mixed it up with some 3-in-a-row Candy Crush candy crushing?

Next time I’ll share my initial ideas and some early screenshots from the prototype.
